The Abia State Government has commenced the implementation of its newly centralised transport system in Umuahia, marking a major step in its efforts to reorganise and modernise transportation across the state. As part of the initiative, transport operators are being moved in phases to the newly established Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.
Speaking at the Government House in Umuahia after the weekly State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the government had spent considerable time engaging transport stakeholders to address concerns and secure their support for the transition.
He explained that the consultations had yielded positive results, leading to the full operation of the terminal. According to him, informal transport operators and their unions have already been relocated to the facility, despite the usual resistance that often accompanies major reforms.
Kanu noted that while a few operators still have reservations about the new arrangement, the government views such reactions as a normal response to change. He stressed that discussions have continued with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and wider acceptance of the system.
The commissioner revealed that transport parks across the state have now been consolidated under the new terminal. He added that the Commissioner for Transport and his team have held several meetings with transport operators, including a recent engagement aimed at resolving outstanding issues.
He further disclosed that enforcement of the policy has begun to ensure compliance with the relocation process. The implementation, he said, will follow a phased approach, starting with the Abia Green Shuttle buses, followed by informal transport operators and eventually formal transport companies.
Also addressing journalists, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, dismissed claims that the government was taking away anyone’s means of livelihood. He maintained that the objective of the policy is to create a more organised and efficient transport system that benefits both operators and commuters.
Ukaegbu explained that transport unions and operators were instructed to nominate four representatives each to the terminal. These representatives will be formally identified with reflective tags and integrated into the operational framework of the new transport hub.
He stated that loading activities at the terminal are guided by a transparent first come, first served arrangement that applies equally to all operators, regardless of union affiliation. According to him, between 80 and 90 per cent of operators have already embraced the initiative, while discussions continue with those yet to fully align with the new system.
The transport commissioner also highlighted some of the facilities provided at the terminal, including a fully furnished and air conditioned drivers’ lodge, as well as a comfortable environment designed to improve the travel experience for passengers. He described the terminal as a modern facility equipped with everything required for an efficient transport operation.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, said the centralisation of transport activities would bring several long term benefits to the state. He explained that the initiative would help reduce traffic congestion within the city, eliminate the problem of multiple loading points, lower operational costs for transporters and strengthen security by curbing unregulated transport activities.
Ekeoma added that the new arrangement is expected to improve earnings for transport operators while also protecting passengers from the excessive charges and exploitation that have long been associated with the sector. He described the reform as a practical solution to challenges that have affected transportation in the state for many years.
