Adeleke Forms Panel to Investigate Osun Killings

Zoyols News

Governor Ademola Adeleke has set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the recent violence that led to deaths and injuries in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.

The incident occurred on August 24, 2026, at Naira and Kobo Junction and the motor park area. The Coroner Inquest, which takes effect from August 31, has been tasked with finding out what caused the violence, identifying the victims, and establishing if anyone or any group is responsible.

Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola will head the panel, with Mr Abiodun Badiora serving as secretary. Other members include a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, a representative of the Nigerian Bar Association, a civil society representative, a community leader from Ikire, and a medical and forensic expert.

The panel has been given wide powers to summon witnesses, demand police and medical records, visit the scene of the incident, and receive both oral and documentary evidence. It is also expected to look into the role of security operatives and check if their actions followed the law and human rights standards.

The governor has directed that all relevant evidence, including firearms, station diaries, communication logs, medical records, and videos, be preserved for the inquiry. He has also requested the Inspector General of Police and other relevant bodies to take interim administrative steps regarding any officer whose continued involvement may affect public confidence.

The panel is expected to begin sitting within seven days of its inauguration and submit its report within 30 days. Victims’ families, eyewitnesses, journalists, transport workers, police officers, and other stakeholders have been invited to submit memoranda and evidence.

Adeleke has assured the people of Ikire and the families of those affected that the investigation will be thorough, fair, and transparent, and that anyone found responsible will face justice regardless of their position or connections.
