As the Super Eagles prepare for their opening encounter against Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi is projecting an air of calm confidence. Addressing the media during a pre-match press conference on Monday, the veteran midfielder insisted that the team is not feeling the weight of expectations, despite the high stakes of a tournament opener.
Ndidi emphasized that the players are fully aware of how vital this first game is for building momentum. He noted that the camp is currently buzzing with high spirits, with every player and member of the technical staff maintaining a singular focus on the task at hand. For Ndidi, the goal is clear: start strong and set the tone for the rest of the competition.
Addressing his new role as the squad’s leader, the former Leicester City star, who now plies his trade with Besiktas in Turkey, explained that the captaincy hasn’t changed his approach. Having been a core part of the national team setup for years, he feels right at home. He credited the presence of other senior players and the guidance of the coaching staff for creating a balanced environment where pressure is replaced by preparation.
This tournament marks a significant personal comeback for Ndidi. While he was a key figure in the 2019 squad that secured a bronze medal in Egypt, he was forced to watch from the sidelines during the 2023 edition due to a late injury. His absence was felt then, as Nigeria fought their way to the final under Jose Peseiro before narrowly losing to the hosts, Côte d’Ivoire.
Now back at full fitness and wearing the captain’s armband, Ndidi is determined to lead from the front. With the lessons learned from previous tournaments and a squad hungry for success, the Super Eagles seem ready to turn their preparations into results on the Moroccan turf.
