The intersection of music and sports has become a major stage for Nigerian talent, as Afrobeats stars continue to headline some of the world’s most prestigious athletic events. This cultural fusion was on full display this weekend in Rabat, Morocco, as Davido took center stage at the official AFCON 2025 Kick-Off Concert.
The high-energy event, held at the OLM Souissi Fan Zone on Saturday evening, was designed to drum up excitement just 24 hours before the tournament’s first whistle. Performing for a massive, enthusiastic crowd, Davido shared the spotlight with international heavyweights like French Montana and Lartiste. The atmosphere was electric as the “Timeless” singer delivered a medley of his biggest hits, including “Unavailable,” “IF,” and “Fall,” with the audience singing along to every word.
This latest performance in Morocco is just one chapter in Davido’s storied history of sports-related appearances. In 2022, he achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Nigerian artist to be featured on an official FIFA World Cup soundtrack, later performing the anthem “Hayya Hayya (Better Together)” during the tournament’s draw and final ceremonies in Qatar. His ability to command global attention has paved the way for many of his peers to follow suit.
Burna Boy similarly made history in June 2023, when he became the first African artist to headline the UEFA Champions League Final Kick-Off Show. Performing at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, he captivated 80,000 fans with “Last Last” and “It’s Plenty” just moments before the world’s biggest club football match commenced. Not long after, Rema brought his “Afrorave” sound to the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, performing “Calm Down” for an audience of football legends including Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.
The trend has only gained more momentum recently. In July 2025, Grammy-winner Tems made history at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as the first African artist to perform at the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup final halftime show, delivering a stunning rendition of “Love Me Jeje.” Other stars like Yemi Alade, who dazzled at the AFCON 2023 opening in Abidjan, and veterans like Femi Kuti have all played critical roles in cementing the bond between the pitch and the studio. With Wizkid, Rema, and Kizz Daniel also appearing on major international sports platforms, it is clear that Afrobeats is no longer just a musical genre—it is the official rhythm of global sports.
