Barcelona clawed their way back from an early setback to defeat Atletico Madrid 3–1 on Tuesday, a result that pushes them four points clear at the top of La Liga and restores confidence at a crucial moment in their season.
Atletico struck first through Alex Baena, who broke free behind Barca’s high line and finished calmly after a VAR check confirmed he was onside. The early goal briefly unsettled the hosts, coming on the heels of a rough Champions League outing and an unconvincing league win over Alaves.
Barcelona found their rhythm soon enough. Pedri, returning to the starting lineup, slipped a clever pass to Raphinha, who rounded Jan Oblak and tucked in the equaliser. Moments later the champions had a chance to flip the game completely, but Robert Lewandowski sent a penalty well over the bar after Dani Olmo was brought down.
The missed chance didn’t slow Barca for long. Early in the second half, Lewandowski fought to keep the ball alive in the box and nudged it toward Olmo, who swept in a composed finish to give his side the lead. Olmo paid for the effort, injuring his shoulder in the process and making way for Marcus Rashford.
Barcelona’s injury worries continued when Pedri later limped off, leaving the crowd uneasy ahead of next week’s Champions League meeting with Frankfurt. Still, the team pressed on and kept Atletico at bay. Thiago Almada came closest to pulling his side level, but his effort skewed wide after a strong run across the box.
The match was sealed in stoppage time when Oblak parried an effort from Rashford, only for Alejandro Balde to pick out Ferran Torres, who calmly finished to wrap up the win.
With five straight league victories since their defeat in the Clasico, Barcelona finally produced the kind of performance expected of a title contender, and Zoyols Blog reports that the victory also dents Atletico’s momentum after a long unbeaten run.
Real Madrid travel to face Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday as they look to close the gap, while Atletico remain six points behind the leaders.
