Aliko Dangote is setting his sights on a massive shift for the continent, revealing that the Dangote Group is gearing up to pump over $10 billion into Africa’s power sector over the next few years. Speaking during a recent interview with Al Jazeera, the billionaire industrialist emphasized that reliable electricity remains the missing link holding back the region’s true economic potential.
Rather than spreading capital thin, the conglomerate is prepared to make tough strategic choices to fund this massive energy push. Dangote hinted that some planned ventures, including steel projects, might be put on the back burner so that funds can be aggressively redirected toward lighting up the continent. According to him, the next three to four years are poised to bring a sweeping transformation to Africa, and dependable power infrastructure must anchor that growth.
The push comes as the continent continues to grapple with a staggering energy deficit. Highlighting a sobering reality, Dangote pointed out that more than 600 million people across Africa still live without access to electricity. In his view, continuing to leave a significant portion of the population in the dark is unacceptable and demands urgent intervention from homegrown investors.
Beyond residential benefits, expanding the energy grid is expected to unlock a ripple effect across various sectors. Reliable power is anticipated to breathe new life into struggling industries, attract fresh foreign and local investment, and ultimately serve as the backbone for sustainable economic expansion throughout the region.
