Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning following the death of Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He was 76.
Authorities in the emirate announced that flags across Dubai will be flown at half mast throughout the mourning period as tributes are paid to the late member of the ruling family.
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the Ruler of Dubai, expressed his grief over the loss of his younger brother in a message shared on social media.
He prayed for Ahmed’s soul and described him as a brother who would remain in the hearts and prayers of his family despite his passing. He also prayed for his brother to be granted a place in paradise and for his loved ones to receive strength and comfort.
UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also conveyed his condolences to the Ruler of Dubai, recognising Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s contributions to the country since its early years.
He said Ahmed’s work and legacy would remain part of the UAE’s story and continue to be remembered as the country advances its development.
Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former Vice President and Ruler of Dubai who played a major role in the establishment and development of the emirate.
During his public career, Ahmed held senior responsibilities across several areas, including security, sports and business. He was involved in Dubai’s public security sector and also played a role in the development of horse racing and real estate activities in the emirate.
He also served as chairman of the Dubai Police and Public Security sector while maintaining a strong connection with Dubai’s horse racing community.
His career covered several areas of public life during a period of significant growth and transformation in Dubai.
His death has now led to an official mourning period across the emirate, as Dubai honours his life and contributions to public service and the development of modern Dubai.
