Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has explained why the Nigeria Police Force temporarily halted the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
Egbetokun gave the clarification during a meeting with a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He said the decision was taken out of consideration for Nigerians and in deference to the NBA, pending the hearing of a Motion on Notice before the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, scheduled for October 16, 2025.
According to him, the temporary suspension does not invalidate the law but serves as a responsible pause while awaiting judicial clarification. “We decided to suspend enforcement temporarily pending the outcome of the court hearing,” he stated.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, noted that the meeting allowed for meaningful discussions on strengthening cooperation between the police and the legal community, particularly in promoting the rule of law and public trust.
He added that although there is no existing court order restraining the enforcement, the police opted to act with restraint in the interest of fairness and respect for the ongoing judicial process.
To deepen collaboration, both the Nigeria Police and the NBA have set up a joint committee to work on issues relating to law enforcement and justice administration.
Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to use the suspension period to update their vehicle documentation and ensure full compliance with regulations governing the use of tinted glass.
Egbetokun reiterated the police’s resolve to enforce all existing laws with transparency, fairness, and respect for citizens’ rights while maintaining productive partnerships with stakeholders in the justice system.
