Ekene Onochie is a name that has been gaining significant traction within Nollywood. Hailing from Aguleri in Anambra State, the fast-rising actress has spent the last two years carving out a distinct space for herself through a blend of raw talent and a disciplined work ethic. In a candid sit-down, she shared insights into her journey from the world of technology to the silver screen, her entrepreneurial ventures, and her perspective on life in the spotlight.
While she is currently making waves as a professional actor with over 12 movies to her credit, Ekene’s background is actually in Computer Science. She admits that she often faces questions about why she chose the movie industry over a career in tech. According to her, she has always been “handy” and naturally drawn to the technical world, which led her to pick up tech skills during her teenage years. Although acting remained a beloved hobby, it eventually blossomed into a full-time passion. While she hasn’t put her degree to use just yet, she intends to return to that field sometime in the future.
Reflecting on her early days, Ekene recalls her first time on set for the movie “Bake Me A Heart.” Unlike the horror stories many newcomers share, she describes her debut as a smooth experience, largely due to a patient crew and director. Her real turning point, however, came when she played the antagonist, Chika, in the movie “Monica.” That role allowed her to display a depth and complexity that caught the eyes of producers and fans alike. She notes that she is particularly drawn to characters with emotional weight, as they allow her to truly “live” the role rather than just perform it.
Beyond the cameras, Ekene is a serious entrepreneur. She founded the fashion brand Game Boss during her university days, describing it as a personal canvas for self-expression. She told Reports that the brand is designed for urban dwellers, creative professionals, and athletes who value high-quality, bold clothing that helps them stand out. When asked which path is more financially rewarding, she was blunt in her assessment: entrepreneurship currently pays the bills more than acting does.
The conversation naturally veered toward her personal life and the realities of being a public figure. Despite her growing fame, Ekene insists she still lives life entirely on her own terms. When the topic of relationships came up, she laughed off the usual “ready to mingle” clichés, stating clearly that she is single but not currently looking for a partner. Her ideal man, she says, must be confident yet humble, supportive, and possess a great sense of humor. Interestingly, she is not opposed to marrying a colleague from the film industry, noting that a shared profession would foster a deeper mutual understanding of the unique pressures of the job.
As she looks toward the future, Ekene remains very deliberate about building a brand that extends beyond her performances on screen. She views her career as a way to connect genuinely with an audience while showcasing her versatility. Whether she is critiquing her own expressions in a scene or drafting new designs for her clothing line, her focus remains on authenticity and the belief that while talent is essential, it is grace that truly carries one to the finish line.
