Five-Year Military Pact Signed by Nigeria and Saudi Arabia

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have formalized their commitment to regional security by signing a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at significantly strengthening defence and military cooperation between the two nations.

This comprehensive five-year agreement is set to cover strategic collaboration across multiple critical areas. According to a statement released by Ahmed Dan Wudil, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of State for Defence, the pact includes provisions for:

  • Joint security development.

  • Military training and capacity building.

  • Intelligence sharing.

  • Defence production cooperation.

  • Joint operations to ensure sustainable security development.

The MoU marks a significant step in boosting bilateral relations and enhancing collaborative efforts designed to effectively tackle emerging security challenges faced by both countries.

The agreement was officially signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Mohammed Bello Matawalle, while the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was represented by Dr. Khaleed H. Al-Biyari.

The Defence Ministry welcomed the development, expressing confidence that the enhanced cooperation will accelerate efforts to overcome the current security challenges facing parts of Nigeria. This strategic partnership is seen as leveraging global expertise to secure local and regional stability.

The deepened military engagement between Nigeria and the Middle Eastern power signals a renewed diplomatic focus on diversifying strategic security alliances.
