The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Oluwaseun Faleye, has made a compelling case for a shift in how the nation views its wealth, declaring that Nigeria’s greatest strength lies not in its vast oil reserves or physical infrastructure, but in its youth. Speaking at the 2026 Student Mentorship Summit in Abuja, Faleye emphasized that the energy and innovation brought by the younger generation are the true engines of national prosperity.
The summit, organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students, served as a platform for Faleye to argue that while mineral resources are finite, the potential of a well-guided and protected youth population is limitless. Represented at the event by his Technical Assistant, Dr. Dayo Alao, the NSITF boss noted that for Nigeria to truly develop, there must be a move away from a culture of dependency toward one of self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
Faleye believes that social security is far more than just a safety net for those in trouble; it is a fundamental pillar for building a stable society. He maintained that a workforce that feels protected is naturally more productive, which in turn drives the entire country forward. This perspective aligns with the current mission of the NSITF to expand coverage and ensure that decent work standards are maintained across all sectors.
The gathering also highlighted the practical challenges facing young Nigerians today. NANS National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Samson Ajasa, explained that the summit was designed to bridge the gap between local talent and global opportunities. This year’s theme focused on leadership across diverse fields such as technology, aviation, and security, aiming to equip students with the tools needed to navigate modern industries while advocating against cybercrime and drug abuse.
In recognition of his efforts to reform and lead the NSITF toward a more inclusive future, the student union body presented Faleye with the Social Protection Champion Award. The gesture underscored the growing relationship between the agency and the youth demographic it seeks to protect.
Reflecting on the road ahead, Faleye remarked that the prosperous Nigeria many dream of will not appear by accident. He insisted that such a future must be intentionally designed and built, with the youth at the very center of that construction. By investing in people rather than just resources, the country stands a better chance of sustaining long-term growth and stability.
