The first South South Media and Entertainment Awards (SSMEAwards) will take place on Sunday, December 14, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, spotlighting outstanding achievements across media, entertainment, sports, academia, banking, and public service.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara will be among the top honourees, alongside distinguished figures including sports commissioner Barr. Christopher Tam Abinye Green and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo. The event will be held at the prestigious Atlantic Hall, Hotel Presidential, with the Red Carpet beginning at 5 p.m. and the main ceremony at 6 p.m.
The awards are supported by the Rivers State Government, Ministries of Information, Sports, and Health, as well as corporate partners including Taj Bank, Zenith Bank, Globus Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Ofure Global, Oga Sammy Sports Shop, and Navitas Realties.
SSMEAwards President Sammy Wejinya explained that the initiative aims to encourage excellence and improve service delivery across all sectors. “We want to inspire individuals and organizations to put their best foot forward, knowing that their work is being recognized,” he said. “From sports to entertainment, banking to academia, this awards program celebrates those who contribute meaningfully to society.”
Judging will be conducted by a panel of four experts: Ify Onyegbule, Sampson Fiberesima, Rosemary Orubo, and Sammy Wejinya. Public voting was also opened across the 31 award categories.
The awards will recognize achievements in areas including Young Person of the Year, School of the Year, Media Personality of the Year, Banker of the Year, Brand of the Year, Governor of the Year, Sports Personality of the Year, Social Media Influencer, Construction Company, Academic Don, and many more. Notable honourees include Umo Eno, Siminalayi Fubara, Grant Offor, Gloria Diri, and Omoni Oboli, reflecting a wide spectrum of excellence in governance, business, entertainment, and community service.
With its diverse categories and high-profile guests, the SSMEAwards promises a night of celebration and inspiration, highlighting those who have made significant contributions in their respective fields over the past year.
