Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has directed an urgent investigation and immediate relief measures following a fire that devastated parts of the Gombe timber market, popularly known as Kasuwar Katako, near the Railway Station area of the state capital.

The blaze erupted Monday night, after traders had closed for the day, engulfing several shops and destroying goods, leaving numerous business owners facing heavy losses. In a statement from the Director-General, Press Affairs at Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, the governor described the incident as both painful and deeply distressing, highlighting the disruption it caused to the livelihoods of hardworking residents who rely on the market.

Governor Yahaya expressed heartfelt sympathy to affected traders and assured them of the state government’s support. He emphasized that the administration stands firmly with those impacted during this challenging time.

The governor instructed the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant authorities to immediately assess the damage, determine the cause of the fire, and provide urgent assistance to cushion the losses suffered by victims.

Yahaya commended the swift response of the Gombe State Fire Service, personnel from Gombe State University, the Federal Fire Service, private tanker operators, security agencies, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, noting that their timely action helped prevent the fire from spreading further.

While urging traders and residents to remain calm, the governor reiterated his commitment to strengthening fire prevention and response systems throughout the state. Plans are underway to establish a fully equipped, modern fire service office to enhance future readiness.

The statement also mentioned that the governor was briefed on an accident involving one of the firefighting trucks during the operation. He expressed concern for those affected and prayed for their speedy recovery.
