Governor Umo Eno has sent a firm message to members of his team, making it clear that anyone who cannot stand with his administration should step aside immediately. He delivered this warning in Uyo during the swearing in of Mrs Elsie Anietie Peters as the new Head of Civil Service, a ceremony attended by top government officials and stakeholders.
His remarks followed the recent dismissal of two aides over alleged acts of disloyalty. According to him, it is normal for people to disagree, but it becomes unacceptable when individuals enjoy the benefits of office yet work against the very government they serve. He stressed that every choice has consequences, urging those who no longer believe in the administration to quietly resign rather than create internal discord.
Governor Eno anchored his position on biblical teachings about stewardship and loyalty. He reminded political appointees that faithfulness is a requirement for anyone entrusted with responsibility, referencing passages that highlight the impossibility of divided allegiance. In his view, principles that guide spiritual conduct also apply to public service.
He warned that the era of people benefiting from government while undermining it is over. Loyalty, he said, is a basic expectation, not something to be bargained. While his administration prioritises peace and calm, he cautioned that such traits should not be mistaken for weakness. He reaffirmed his resolve to carry out the mandate given to him by the people of Akwa Ibom to the very end.
On the welfare of workers, the governor shared updates on efforts to clear outstanding gratuities. He revealed that he inherited a backlog running into over one hundred billion naira and has already settled a significant portion. More payments, he noted, were released this month as part of continued efforts to support retirees and current civil servants.
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for providing support that has helped the state meet its financial responsibilities and sustain ongoing development. According to him, the partnership between labour and government in Akwa Ibom remains one of the most harmonious in the country, reflected in consistent payment of salaries and pensions.
Governor Eno went on to commend the newly sworn in Head of Civil Service and praised her predecessor, Elder Effiong Essien, for strengthening the civil service under the ARISE Agenda. His speech has continued to generate discussion about leadership, loyalty and the expectations placed on public office holders.
