Abia State Governor Alex Otti has cleared the air regarding his recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto Correctional Centre. Speaking at the Government House in Umuahia, the Governor addressed a viral video where a critic questioned his motives, firmly stating that the visit was born out of a desire for peace and dialogue rather than any hidden political agenda.
The Governor made it clear during a meeting with the Abia Diaspora Commission and the Abia Global Medical Mission that he has no plans to seek higher office after his current term. According to reports, Otti emphasized that he views his role as a specific mission, and once his tenure is up, he intends to retire from public life entirely. He dismissed rumors of an “Igbo Presidency” or senatorial run, noting that it is vital for leaders to know when to step aside and allow the younger generation to take the lead.
Addressing the situation involving Nnamdi Kanu, Otti revealed that he has been working quietly behind the scenes for the past two years. He explained that as a leader, he felt it was his responsibility to check on Kanu, who is not only a citizen of Nigeria but also an indigene of Umuahia North in Abia State. The Governor argued that while the legal process must run its course, there is always an “administrative window” for intervention that can lead to a more peaceful resolution.
Governor Otti remains a staunch advocate for dialogue over conflict. He pointed out that history shows every war eventually ends at a negotiation table, questioning why anyone would prefer violence when talking is the ultimate solution. He reminded his audience that he had long been a critic of military actions like Operation Python Dance, and he stands by his belief that ignoring a problem does not make it disappear. For him, sitting across a table to discuss grievances is a sign of responsible governance, not an endorsement of disintegration.
Beyond the discussions of peace, the Governor also touched on the broader security challenges facing the country. He warned that criminal elements often hide behind political agitations to harm innocent people. While his administration is committed to pursuing peace through negotiation, he sent a clear warning that any group attempting to bring violence into Abia State would be met with firm resistance.
Otti’s primary focus remains on the stability and development of his state. He urged all stakeholders to embrace dialogue, noting that true progress can only happen in an environment where safety is guaranteed. By choosing the path of reconciliation, the Governor hopes to foster a sense of belonging and security that benefits all residents and businesses in the region.
