Lagos is currently buzzing with energy as over 1,200 artistes, delegates, and production experts have descended on the city for the ninth All Africa Music Awards, popularly known as AFRIMA. The official kick-off was marked by a vibrant welcome soirée held at the residence of the British Deputy High Commissioner, signaling the start of a week-long celebration of African sounds and creativity.

The scale of this year’s event is truly massive. AFRIMA President and Executive Producer, Mike Dada, revealed that the 1,216 arrivals include 732 artistes and managers, along with hundreds of delegates and technical professionals. He pointed out that this influx isn’t just about the music; it’s a significant boost for the local economy. From hotel bookings to transportation and tourism, the presence of these international guests highlights Lagos’ capacity as a premier destination for global events.

During the event, Dada emphasized that AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, views music as far more than just entertainment. He described it as a vital tool for peace and inclusion, capable of bridging gaps regardless of race or background. The goal, he explained, is to harness the talent of the continent to fuel economic growth within the creative industry while reminding the world of our shared humanity.

The British Deputy High Commissioner, Jonny Baxter, also praised the deep cultural ties between the UK and Africa. He noted that Afrobeats is no longer just a local genre but a global powerhouse currently dominating charts in the UK and beyond. Baxter reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting the creative industries as a means of driving mutual economic development between nations.

Representing the host city, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, welcomed the guests to what she described as Africa’s cultural capital. She reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to maintaining an environment where talent can meet opportunity. By supporting platforms like AFRIMA, the ministry aims to ensure that local creatives can continue to collaborate and compete successfully on a global scale.

The week ahead promises to be a busy one, filled with performances and industry sessions that celebrate the legacy and future of African music. With the support of various corporate partners and the Lagos State government, the ninth AFRIMA is shaping up to be a defining moment for the continent’s creative economy.
