A disturbing discovery in Turkey has cast a harsh light on the vulnerability of retired racehorses after a four-year-old thoroughbred mare named Smart Latch ended up in a soup kitchen meal. The scandal came to light last month in the southern city of Mersin, when a diner at a local municipal facility flagged a suspicious object found in their serving of kavurma, a traditional dish usually prepared with beef or lamb.
Agriculture ministry investigators examined the object and identified it as a microchip registered to Smart Latch, a mare known for her victories at the Adana hippodrome. Subsequent laboratory testing confirmed that the meat in the dish was not beef, but rather that of a single-hoofed animal, such as a horse, donkey, or mule. A ministry report on March 12 officially added the kavurma from the Mersin soup kitchen to its list of unsafe food products.
The horse’s owner, Suat Topcu, is devastated. He explained that Smart Latch began her racing career in 2024 but was recently retired following a leg injury during her final race in October. Topcu stated that he had arranged for the mare to be donated to a riding club through a local transporter he trusted. He was completely unaware of her true fate until the agriculture ministry reached out to him regarding the discovery.
While the ministry has fined Topcu approximately 3,000 dollars for failing to formally document the donation, the owner insists that the financial penalty is secondary to seeking justice for the animal. Investigators now suspect that the horse never made it to the intended riding club. Instead, they believe she was illegally slaughtered and her meat was deceitfully relabeled as beef before being sold to the company that supplies the municipality.
In its defense, the Mersin municipality maintained that the ingredients used were sourced in accordance with existing regulations. However, the incident has sparked widespread outrage, with the owner and officials now focused on identifying the specific individuals responsible for the illicit slaughter and the fraudulent supply chain that put racehorse meat on the plates of unsuspecting diners.
