The Super Eagles have suffered a significant setback just days before their crucial CAF 2026 World Cup Playoff final against DR Congo. Midfield stalwart Wilfred Ndidi will be unavailable for Sunday’s decisive clash after accumulating his second booking of the qualifying series during Nigeria’s resounding victory over Gabon.
Ndidi first entered the referee’s book back in March during the qualifier played in Rwanda. He received his second yellow card early in Thursday night’s semi final match in Rabat, Morocco. Despite the caution, the midfielder played a pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s spot in the final, notably assisting Chidera Ejuke’s extra time goal and creating a clear stoppage time chance for Victor Osimhen.
With Ndidi now suspended for the final showdown, Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle will be forced to adjust his midfield strategy. The most likely replacement to slot into the starting lineup is Brentford’s Frank Onyeka. Alternatively, Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika is another strong option the coach can deploy to fill the gap left by Ndidi’s absence.
Nigeria earned their place in the final with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Gabon. They will now face DR Congo, with the winner progressing to the intercontinental playoffs—the very last hurdle before reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
