FIFA has handed sanctions to both Nigeria and DR Congo following incidents during their 2026 World Cup qualifying match. The disciplinary review, released as part of the organization’s latest report on qualifying fixtures, found both federations responsible for separate breaches during the November 16, 2025 encounter.
Nigeria was penalized after spectators were seen throwing objects during the match, a violation of FIFA’s rules on order and security at games. Under Article 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the Nigeria Football Federation has been fined 1,000 Swiss francs.
The DR Congo Football Association received a heavier fine after supporters were reported to have used laser pointers and similar electronic devices, an offence falling under Article 17.2.d. FIFA imposed a 5,000 Swiss franc fine for this breach.
FIFA emphasized that disciplinary measures are determined based on the specifics of each incident and remain subject to appeal. While the publicly released summary aims to inform media and fans, the official legal rulings have been communicated directly to the federations involved.
