The Senior Pastor of The Second Coming of Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa, has strongly criticised any church leader who advises members to rely on charms, describing such an act as pure idolatry. He insisted that no genuine pastor would encourage practices that contradict total trust in God.
Pastor Giwa made the remarks while reacting to a video circulating online in which a pastor based in Lagos allegedly told members of his congregation to fortify themselves with charms as protection against Islamic terrorists. Speaking to his church in Akure, Ondo State, he openly questioned the spiritual foundation of such counsel and expressed deep concern over the message being passed to worshippers.
According to him, anyone promoting the use of charms in the church is clearly disconnected from the truth of the Christian faith. He warned that charms are prepared by herbalists who are mortal, while God alone is eternal and unfailing. In his words, placing confidence in objects made by human hands is a clear sign of misplaced faith.
He reminded his listeners that scripture teaches believers to rely solely on God for protection and deliverance. Drawing from the Bible, he stressed that those who trust in God are never put to shame, unlike those who depend on earthly or man made powers.
Pastor Giwa further cited the account in First Kings chapter eighteen, where the prophet Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal to demonstrate the difference between the true God and false gods. He recalled how the prophets of Baal cried out from morning till noon with no response, while Elijah called on God and fire fell immediately, consuming the sacrifice completely.
He also referenced Jeremiah chapter ten verse eight, which describes those who worship idols or depend on crafted objects as foolish. Pastor Giwa concluded that faith rooted in God remains the only true source of safety, guidance and hope, a position he says must never be compromised in the church.
