Internal rumbles within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have taken a sharp turn as the battle lines for 2027 are being drawn. With the National Convention just around the corner, a significant faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has made it clear: the party will not be rolling out the red carpet for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. This stance sets up a direct collision with the camp loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, which has shown a much more open leaning toward the current presidency.
The friction is palpable as the party prepares for its March 29 gathering in Abuja. While the Wike-backed National Caretaker Committee is moving full steam ahead with the convention, the Turaki-led group, supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, is adamant that an opposition party has no business endorsing a candidate from the ruling APC. Factional spokesperson Ini Ememobong described such a move as fundamentally unfair to the democratic process, insisting that the PDP must remain a distinct and competitive alternative.
Despite the heated rhetoric, there is a frantic effort behind the scenes to keep the house from falling apart. Elder statesmen like Chief Olabode George and former Senate President Bukola Saraki are pushing heavily for reconciliation. Their primary goal is simple: ensure the PDP remains a viable platform for its own aspirants. Saraki has been vocal about the need for a unified front, suggesting that the party’s priority must be securing its place on the 2027 ballot, regardless of the current internal storms.
On the other side of the divide, the Wike camp is already looking past the convention toward the primaries. A senior source within the group hinted that once the current leadership issues are settled, the party will move quickly to identify its own flagbearer in line with the Electoral Act. They dismissed the idea of the party being an appendage to any other power, noting that while personal alliances exist, the formal machinery of the PDP will still produce its own presidential candidate.
The debate has also touched on the broader health of Nigeria’s democracy. Chief Bode George warned that any move toward a one-party state would be “worse than infidelity.” He reminded younger party members that the PDP was founded on the principle of national inclusion, allowing even minority tribes a seat at the table—a legacy he claims is being threatened by the personal ambitions of a few. George’s message was clear: no single individual owns the party, and its strength lies in its diversity across all 36 states.
As these political maneuvers unfold, the economic backdrop remains a major concern for observers. With global tensions in the Middle East fluctuating, experts are urging the government to look beyond short-term fixes. Public relations and media professionals, contributing their views to Reports, suggested that Nigeria must leverage local assets like the Dangote Refinery to stabilize fuel prices and protect the economy from external shocks. They argue that windfall earnings from oil should be used to build a “buffer” for the country, rather than being swallowed up by recurrent spending.
Whether the PDP can successfully navigate its internal “roundabouts,” as Bode George calls them, remains to be seen. From Kwara to Lagos, the rank and file are watching closely.
