Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has urged politicians to draw a firm line between legitimate criticism of government policies and actions that threaten national unity and security. Speaking during a visit from senior Directors of the Department of State Services at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, he emphasized the importance of patriotism and warned against politicising security issues for opposition gains.
Sani criticized certain politicians who, under the guise of opposing government policies, tarnish the nation’s image and incite unrest. He described these behaviors as anti-democratic and damaging, reminding that political offices are temporary but Nigeria’s existence is permanent. He cautioned that those who provoke conflict for personal or political advantage risk becoming merchants of discord who harm the very people they should protect.
Reflecting on his activism days, Sani recalled civil rights leader Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s advice to separate criticism of leaders from attacks on Nigeria as a country. He also pointed out that many opposition figures were absent during the military era struggles that paved the way for democracy, calling on the elite not to use their privilege to undermine the security of vulnerable communities.
Highlighting a disconnect, the Governor noted that while elites enjoy peace in exclusive neighborhoods, some exploit religion for political purposes, disregarding the safety of ordinary citizens. He condemned politicians who enjoy the spoils of insecurity yet worsen the situation by politicizing it.
Sani made it clear that Kaduna’s development and unity are paramount. He insists no one should be judged by religion but by their character and emphasized that Muslims and Christians in the state must work together. He also praised security leaders for their ongoing efforts in tackling the country’s security challenges.
