The 144th edition of the Stawell Gift delivered one of its most breathtaking finishes in history, as American sprinting sensation Sha’Carri Richardson charged from the scratch mark to secure an incredible victory. In a display of pure speed and precision, she caught up with the field by the 90-meter mark and pulled away to finish the race in just 13.15 seconds.
Reflecting on her performance, Richardson shared that her strategy was built on patience. Following her coach’s instructions, she focused on a steady start during the first 10 meters before executing her full power. She told Seven Network television post race that she only truly realized the win was hers once she surged past the 90-meter point. At 26, the world-class athlete has now become only the third woman in the history of the event to win from the scratch position, taking home the 40,000 Australian dollar prize.
This victory adds to an already illustrious career for Richardson, who secured a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics and played a key role in the gold-medal-winning 4×100 relay team that same year. She also holds the title of 100-meter world champion from 2023. Her success at Stawell follows a tense semifinal earlier in the day where a slight miscalculation almost cost her the race, but she corrected her form for the final to deliver a flawless performance.
The atmosphere at the meet was electric as Richardson celebrated with the crowd before embracing her partner, former world champion Christian Coleman. Despite past personal challenges and a domestic violence charge involving Richardson last year, the couple remains together, with Coleman present as the star attraction for the men’s side of the competition.
Richardson expressed deep appreciation for the unique energy of the event, describing it as one of the most entertaining meets she has ever participated in. She noted that the genuine love and support for track and field displayed by the fans made the experience truly unbeatable, cementing the Stawell Gift as a standout moment in her sporting journey.
