Stay of Execution: Why the NFF is Sticking with Eric Chelle

Zoyols Blog

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved to silence the growing rumors regarding the future of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, making it clear that the Franco-Malian strategist is going nowhere. Despite recent reports linking him with interested national teams like Tunisia and Angola, the NFF maintains that Chelle is fully committed to the Nigerian project and remains a cornerstone of the country’s footballing future.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau addressed these speculations head-on, noting that the federation still has a solid year remaining on the coach’s current contract. The NFF is prioritizing stability and wants to ensure the coach is shielded from any external distractions. Gusau pointed out that while other teams might be knocking on the door, they will simply have to wait, as Chelle is happy with his current role and the progress the team has made under his watch.

The debate around Chelle’s future often centers on the financial lure of other jobs, but the NFF leadership believes there are more important factors at play than just a bigger paycheck. Gusau explained that for a world-class coach, success is rarely about money alone; it’s about having the right talent and the right environment to win major trophies. He noted that the Super Eagles currently boast a squad of world-class “materials” that allow Chelle to execute his vision at the highest level, something other interested nations might not be able to offer.

Chelle’s reputation has skyrocketed since he led Nigeria to a bronze-medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. His tactical shifts, particularly an intensified attacking style that saw the Eagles become one of the highest-scoring sides in the tournament, have won over many critics. The NFF sees this as just the beginning, with plans already in motion to use upcoming windows to integrate more young talent into the squad under Chelle’s guidance.

Ultimately, the bond between the coach and the national team appears to be built on mutual trust. Gusau revealed that he has held several private discussions with the manager, who reaffirmed his belief that he can achieve his biggest career dreams right here in Nigeria. For now, the message is clear: the federation is standing firmly behind its man, and the Super Eagles are focused on the road ahead without any coaching changes on the horizon.
