South African sensation Tyla Laura Seethal, widely known as Tyla, has taken home the Best African Music Performance award at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards for her hit single Push 2 Start. This victory cements her as a trailblazer, marking her second Grammy after her historic 2024 win for Water, which made her the first-ever winner in the category.
At this year’s ceremony, Tyla outshone a formidable lineup of African stars, including Burna Boy with Love, Davido featuring Omah Lay with With You, Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid with Gimme Dat, and Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin with Hope & Love. Her performance and recognition continue to showcase the growing global influence of African music.
Meanwhile, Nigerian powerhouse Burna Boy narrowly missed out on the Best Global Music Album award. The Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia took the honor for Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo, beating Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness alongside other strong contenders like Siddhant Bhatia’s Sounds Of Kumbha, Youssou N’Dour’s Éclairer le monde – Light the World, Shakti’s Mind Explosion (50th Anniversary Tour Live), and Anoushka Shankar featuring Alam Khan & Sarathy Korwar with Chapter III: We Return to Light.
Tyla’s triumph not only underscores her meteoric rise but also highlights the increasing recognition of African artists on the world’s biggest music stage.
