Students of the University of Jos staged a protest on Tuesday over a power outage that has left their hostels without electricity for more than a week, raising concerns about worsening living conditions on campus.
The students said the situation has made day to day life difficult, adding that the lack of electricity and other basic services has disrupted their studies since the start of the current academic session.
One of the protesting students, Felix Bala, said the blackout began shortly after resumption and has continued without any meaningful response from the school authorities.
He explained that students were informed the power supply had been disconnected, but repeated appeals for restoration have not yielded results.
According to him, the issue has gone beyond electricity alone, as the absence of power has also affected water supply, leaving hostels without proper sanitation and clean facilities. He noted that water pumping systems depend on electricity, which has worsened the situation since last week.
Bala added that students had waited several days in hope of improvement, but nothing changed from Thursday through Monday, which eventually led to the protest.
Another student who spoke anonymously said there had been efforts by some off campus students to calm the situation and encourage dialogue with the school management, but the protest continued as frustrations grew.
As of the time of this report, attempts to reach the Students’ Union Government leadership and key university officials, including the Dean of Students Affairs, were not successful.
The students have maintained that they will continue their action until electricity is restored and normal conditions return to their hostels.
