President Bola Tinubu yesterday gave a rousing commendation to the courage and unwavering dedication of the nation’s troops, emphasizing that the immense sacrifices made by these military heroes in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry are directly responsible for the significant strengthening of national stability.
Speaking at the State House in Abuja during the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund, the President declared that the annual commemoration, observed every January 15, is a solemn reminder of the true cost of peace and the critical, enduring importance of national unity. “Today, we pay tribute to our veterans and salute our serving troops who continue to confront terrorism, insurgency, and other security challenges,” Tinubu stated. “Their resilience, often in the face of great danger, remains a source of profound national pride.”
The President stressed that a grateful nation has an abiding duty to “honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve.” He took the opportunity to urge all Nigerians to champion mutual respect, tolerance, and understanding, firmly rejecting divisive rhetoric. He argued that the nation’s diversity is a natural, cherished asset that must be protected at all costs.
Tinubu highlighted the tangible gains recorded in the security sector under his administration, noting that collaboration among security agencies has been entrenched. These efforts have led to significant successes: tens of thousands of insurgents have surrendered, key terrorist leaders have been neutralized, and many captives have been freed. Furthermore, the administration has successfully contained oil theft, piracy, and illegal fishing in the maritime domain while supporting the acquisition of new platforms and advanced capabilities for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
He commended the Armed Forces for their exceptional bravery across multiple theaters of operation, noting that their relentless efforts have already restored normalcy to several communities. Looking forward, the President revealed that the Ministry of Defence is developing a comprehensive program to reclaim ungoverned spaces across the country. This initiative will leverage the experience of retired military personnel to strengthen security, restore governmental presence, and revitalize local economies, thereby preventing the resurgence of violence in previously affected areas.
To deepen public engagement and appreciation for the troops, the Ministry of Defence has also introduced an innovative “Thank a Soldier” QR code for this year’s remembrance activities. The platform allows Nigerians both at home and abroad to send personalized messages of gratitude to the troops, encouraging digital participation and youth involvement in national service. “As we launch the 2026 emblem, I urge all Nigerians to wear it with pride. It symbolizes sacrifice, honour, and national gratitude,” he said.
The President reaffirmed that improving the welfare of military personnel and federal security operatives remains a top priority under his command. He outlined several measures already undertaken, including enhanced allowances, upgraded barracks, strengthened healthcare, expanded health maintenance, and organized pension verification through BVN and NIN integration platforms.
