The political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election is shifting rapidly, with a major alliance reportedly solidifying between two heavyweights. Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, is poised to become the vice-presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, running alongside the party’s flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.
This development marks a significant turn of events, especially given the friction that characterized the party’s recent primary election. Amaechi had contested fiercely for the top ticket but ultimately lost out to the former Vice President. During the buildup to the primaries, Amaechi was vocal about his ambitions, openly stating that he had no interest in purchasing the nomination form just to end up as a running mate.
The aftermath of that primary election was fraught with tension. Amaechi initially rejected the results, a stance backed by several aggrieved party members who claimed the process was manipulated to favor Atiku. However, pragmatism appears to have overridden past grievances. A prominent party stakeholder and the immediate past chairman of the party in Rivers State, Leader Sampson, confirmed that Amaechi has now formally accepted the vice-presidential slot, signaling a unified front as the election season heats up.
By bridging these internal divides, the ticket aims to position itself as a formidable force against the ruling party. How voters and party loyalists will react to this sudden reconciliation remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly injects a fresh wave of momentum into the race for the presidency.
