In a significant move to strengthen the ties between the ruling party and Nigerians living abroad, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has called for renewed unity and deeper engagement among members in the Diaspora. Speaking virtually during an economic summit in New York, the Chairman emphasized that a united front is essential for promoting Nigeria’s image and driving national development from beyond its borders.
The summit, organized by the Office of the Special Adviser on Diaspora Coordination and Mobilisation, served as a rallying point for party faithful across the United States. Professor Yilwatda praised the APC USA chapter for moving past previous internal frictions. He noted that the Diaspora plays a pivotal role in Nigeria’s progress, acting as a bridge for investment and political cohesion on the global stage.
During his keynote address, the National Chairman formally reaffirmed the mandate of Professor Tai Balofin as the Special Adviser on Diaspora Coordination and Mobilisation. He urged all members and various groups to work closely with this office, which remains the constitutionally recognized liaison for party matters worldwide. The Chairman was clear in his message to those operating outside the official framework, inviting them to realign with the recognized party structure to ensure a more impactful and organized presence abroad.
The event also drew attention to the economic potential of such partnerships. The Mayor of Linden, New Jersey, Derek Armstead, was among the key stakeholders who highlighted the mutual benefits of investment between Nigeria and the U.S. He pointed out that cities with large Nigerian populations, like Linden, are ripe for bilateral economic growth and stronger people-to-people connections.
In his own remarks, Professor Tai Balofin described the gathering as a critical milestone for uniting the APC globally and attracting sustainable investments back home. He also used the platform to advance the ongoing digital membership registration for Nigerians in the Diaspora, emphasizing that empowering those abroad is central to the party’s progressive values.
The summit saw participation from high-ranking diplomats and leaders, including Nigeria’s Consul General, Ambassador Abubakar Jidda, and the Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Syndoph Endoni. Their presence underscored the importance of the Diaspora not just as a political bloc, but as a vital engine for Nigeria’s long-term economic stability and international relations.
