INEC has revealed plans to deploy around 1.4 million temporary staff and operate more than 176,000 polling units for the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a meeting with an international delegation, the commission’s chairman said preparations include ongoing voter registration and efforts to clean up the register using biometric technology. The commission is also working with transport unions to ensure polling units open on time nationwide at 8:30 a.m.
Special attention is being given to making voting easier for persons with disabilities, elderly voters, pregnant women and nursing mothers. Recent off-cycle elections, including the one in Osun, were used to test the commission’s systems, which recorded high upload rates for accreditation and results.
The chairman highlighted major challenges ahead, such as insecurity, vote-buying, disinformation and localised violence. He said the commission is working closely with security agencies and anti-graft bodies to address these issues.
The visiting delegation praised Nigerians’ commitment to democracy and expressed readiness to support a peaceful and credible election process.
