Victor Osimhen has paid glowing tribute to the late Rashidi Yekini, insisting the former Super Eagles striker remains Nigeria’s greatest ever, even as he continues to close in on long-standing national records.
The Galatasaray forward was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Marrakech, scoring once and providing an assist in a commanding display. The performance moved Osimhen closer to Yekini’s famous goal tally for the Super Eagles, but the striker was quick to dismiss any talk of personal milestones.
Speaking after picking up the Man of the Match award, Osimhen made it clear that records mean little when weighed against legacy. He stressed that surpassing goal numbers would never diminish Yekini’s place in Nigerian football history, describing him as the benchmark for every striker who has worn the national colours.
Osimhen explained that his motivation has always been to give his best for the team, drawing inspiration not only from Yekini but also from more recent figures such as Odion Ighalo. According to him, contributing to the Super Eagles’ journey is what truly matters, and his biggest ambition remains winning a major title for Nigeria alongside his teammates.
Despite his standout showing against Algeria, Osimhen was eager to shift the spotlight away from himself, praising the collective effort of the squad. He acknowledged the quality of the Algerian side and said the victory was the result of teamwork, discipline and commitment from everyone on the pitch.
The striker’s current form marks a sharp contrast to the previous AFCON, where he managed just one goal as Nigeria finished runners-up. This time, he has already found the net four times in five matches, a rise he attributes to growth, self-reflection and increased confidence.
Osimhen said he has learned from past mistakes and feels more complete as a player, crediting the support of his teammates for helping him express himself fully on the field. He added that individual statistics are secondary to the team’s ultimate goal, which is lifting the trophy.
Nigeria now turn their attention to a high-stakes semi-final clash against hosts Morocco on Wednesday in Rabat. As the Super Eagles prepare for another tough test, Osimhen will once again lead the line, hoping to extend his fine run while keeping the focus firmly on collective success.
