Tragedy in Nigeria: 22 Killed in Niger and Plateau Attacks

Zoyols News

The atmosphere across Niger, Plateau, and Kebbi states has turned somber following a series of violent raids by armed groups that have left dozens dead and many more displaced. These coordinated assaults, which targeted rural farming communities and mining sites, highlight a troubling surge in insecurity that continues to stretch the capacity of local security forces.

In Niger State, the Shiroro Local Government Area became a flashpoint of tragedy when gunmen descended on several villages, including Bagna and Erena. The attackers operated with terrifying freedom for several hours, overwhelming local defenses and setting fire to homes. Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the invasion, noting that the casualties included a driver and two community guards who were killed while trying to protect the area. The violence has triggered a mass exodus, with terrified residents fleeing their ancestral homes to seek refuge in nearby towns like Gwada and Zumba.

Further north in Kebbi State, the devastation was equally severe. Suspected elements of the Mamudawa terrorist group reportedly stormed the villages of Debbe and Shabanda under the cover of darkness. While the exact death toll remains subject to verification, witnesses describe a scene of chaos where scores were feared killed and entire blocks of houses were reduced to ashes. Bashir Usman, representing the Kebbi State Police, stated that tactical teams from the Illo Division engaged the attackers in a fierce shootout. During the confrontation, security forces neutralized two of the terrorists and recovered military uniforms belonging to the Niger Republic Army and Immigration services, hinting at the cross-border nature of these criminal elements.

The wave of violence also touched Plateau State, specifically targeting the labor-intensive mining sector. In the Ropp District of Barkin Ladi, workers at a local mining site were finishing their shift when gunmen opened fire indiscriminately. The attack claimed the life of 36-year-old Ayuba Pam and left two others with serious injuries. Almost simultaneously, another group struck the Chenye village in the Riyom Local Government Area, where another resident was shot dead in a similar fashion.

Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders, confirmed these separate incidents to Reports, describing a growing sense of dread among the local population. Residents like Nenfort Daniel spoke of the sheer confusion that followed the sporadic gunfire, as families scrambled for safety in the bush. While police reinforcements have since been deployed to these volatile zones to prevent further bloodshed, the communities remain on edge, mourning their dead and wondering when the next shadow will fall on their doorsteps.
