2027: Atiku Yet to Declare Presidential Bid Says Aide

ZoyolsBlog

Speculation continues to swirl around the political future of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections. While many of his contemporaries have made clear indications about their intentions, Atiku has remained cautious, deliberately holding back from a formal declaration.

Some coalition partners within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, have openly expressed readiness to run—pledging even to serve only a single term under a North-South zoning deal. Atiku’s silence, however, has stirred unease in some quarters, with suspicions that the coalition may have been designed to ease his path back to the presidency. The ADC has since dismissed such claims, stressing that every aspirant will face equal opportunity in the race for its ticket.

Tension rose further after Atiku’s recent interview with BBC Hausa was interpreted in some circles as an announcement that he would back a younger candidate. The statement quickly gained traction across political platforms, sparking debate on whether the Waziri Adamawa was finally stepping aside.

But his media office swiftly clarified that the reports were misrepresented. Spokesman Paul Ibe explained that Atiku never stated he was withdrawing from the race. Instead, he emphasized that the former vice president only said it was “not yet time” to declare, adding that he would respect the outcome if a younger candidate emerged through fair competition.

“It is clear from both the video and transcripts that at no point did he say he was stepping down,” Ibe noted. “What he said was that the party welcomes young aspirants, and if any of them defeats him in a primary, he would concede and give full support.”

In a follow-up interview, Ibe explained that Atiku’s decision to delay an official declaration is strategic. He said the priority at the moment is strengthening political structures that can carry the weight of a national campaign. “Atiku will not be rushed,” he said. “His focus is on building a solid platform. When the right time comes, the declaration will come.”

He also dismissed renewed debates over zoning, insisting Nigerians are more concerned with competence than where a candidate comes from. “Our polls show people care about leadership, not ethnicity. Nigerians are battling survival, and what they want is someone with the right capacity, not just where he is from,” Ibe said.

On the question of wealth and longstanding controversies, Ibe defended Atiku’s record, insisting that his fortune was already established before 1999. “Atiku bought the PDP’s Wadata Plaza with his own money. His wealth is legitimate, and there’s nothing wrong with being rich,” he argued.

Turning to governance under President Bola Tinubu, Ibe accused the current administration of policies that serve only a privileged few. “You cannot ask Nigerians to tighten their belts while leaders indulge in luxury and excess. These policies work only for the elite, not for ordinary people,” he said.

Ibe described Atiku as one of Nigeria’s most consistent politicians, recalling how he has repeatedly won party primaries and brought capable technocrats into government during the Obasanjo years. “He is open-minded, tolerant, and passionate about Nigeria. That has always been his strength,” he said.

Asked whether Atiku would welcome a potential face-off with former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2027, Ibe said there was no cause for concern. “As a democrat, Atiku believes in open competition. Everyone is free to test their popularity at the polls,” he said.

Despite the mounting speculation, Atiku appears in no hurry to announce his move. His aides insist the timing must be right, comparing it to serving a meal only when it is ready. For now, the former vice president remains a central figure in Nigeria’s unfolding political drama, carefully weighing his options while keeping his supporters and opponents guessing.
