An atmosphere of deep sorrow filled Arochukwu, Abia State, on Thursday as family members, friends, colleagues and residents gathered to bid a final farewell to Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo.
The late actor, who died on May 11 at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with kidney cancer, was laid to rest in his hometown amid an emotional outpouring of grief.
His body arrived in Arochukwu in a solemn motorcade that made a brief stop at the palace of the Eze Arochukwu before proceeding to the Ekubo family compound for the burial rites.
One of the most touching moments of the day came when the traditional ruler, accompanied by one of his chiefs, offered prayers over the actor’s casket. The emotional scene, captured in a video that has since circulated widely, reflected the deep respect the community had for the late movie star.
Heartbreak also unfolded as Alexx Ekubo’s sister became overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing his coffin. She burst into tears and attempted to move toward the ambulance carrying his remains before relatives and sympathizers stepped in to comfort and restrain her.
Residents lined the streets as the procession passed through the town, paying their last respects to the actor whose death has left many devastated.
Several of his colleagues from the Nigerian film industry were also present to honor his memory. Among those who attended were Omoni Oboli, Yomi Casual, Kevin Ikeduba, Ini Edo and IK Ogbonna.
The stars took part in a quiet procession through the community, dressed in matching T shirts bearing Alexx Ekubo’s image while carrying framed photographs of the late actor in tribute to his life and legacy.
Alexx Ekubo was eventually laid to rest in his hometown, bringing an emotional chapter to a close for his family, friends and admirers.
