Nana Otedola, wife of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, has finally addressed the long standing misconception surrounding her nationality, making it clear that she is proudly Nigerian and not Ghanaian as many have assumed over the years.
The mother of DJ Cuppy made the clarification during a conversation with her pregnant daughter, Temi Otedola, in a video that has been widely shared on social media.
Speaking candidly, Nana explained that despite the widespread belief that she has Ghanaian roots, she is an Egba woman from Abeokuta in Ogun State. She stressed that her heritage has always been Nigerian and said she was happy to clear the misunderstanding once and for all.
According to her, “To clear the room for everybody, I’m an Egba woman, and that’s the part I’ll gladly claim as a Nigerian. I am not a Ghanaian. My roots are in Abeokuta.”
She went on to explain that although she was born in Kaduna State and spent nearly twenty years living in northern Nigeria, her place of birth does not change her ethnic identity.
Nana noted that growing up in different parts of the country may have contributed to the confusion about her background, but maintained that her family roots remain firmly in Abeokuta.
She also shared the story behind her name, revealing that her full name is Nana Fatima. According to her, the name was given to her by her grandfather during her Sunnah naming ceremony and has remained part of her identity ever since.
Her remarks appear to put an end to years of speculation from social media users who had repeatedly identified her as Ghanaian without knowing her true background.
The conversation also offered another glimpse into the Otedola family dynamic. In a recent podcast, Temi Otedola described her mother as the ultimate decision maker in the household, joking that even her father rarely goes against her wishes. She recalled an amusing incident where Nana insisted that DJ Cuppy finish a plate of amala she had prepared before she was allowed to leave the house.
The family had also been at the centre of public attention a few months ago after rumours emerged that Femi and Nana Otedola had separated following more than two decades of marriage. The speculation intensified after many noticed that the couple had unfollowed each other on Instagram. Femi also did not publicly celebrate his wife during Mother’s Day or International Women’s Day, further fueling the rumours.
Questions continued to grow when Femi was absent from Temi Otedola’s intimate 30th birthday celebration in Spain. The gathering was attended by Nana Otedola, Temi’s husband Mr Eazi, DJ Cuppy, and Tolani Otedola.
The rumours were eventually laid to rest when the couple reunited for a family vacation alongside their children, reassuring many that their relationship remained intact. One noticeable absence from the family photographs was their only son, Fewa, who lives with a disability.
During Temi Otedola’s wedding last year, Femi Otedola publicly paid tribute to his wife, acknowledging the enormous sacrifices she made while raising their children. He admitted that he spent much of those years focused on building his business, while Nana devoted herself completely to caring for the family and ensuring the children received the attention and support they needed.
The businessman also made headlines in 2023 after jokingly telling members of his yacht crew that he had a girlfriend in the Philippines, a remark that quickly generated widespread reactions online.

The unexpected response left Nana visibly amused as she questioned why her daughter had chosen her for that answer.
