Venerable Emmanuel Olorunmola Ajayi, a retired Archdeacon of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a long record of ministry, service and faith driven impact across several communities.
He died on June 4, 2026 at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja, Kogi State, after decades devoted to church work. His death was confirmed by his son, Omeiza Ajayi of Vanguard Newspapers, who described him as a man who fulfilled his calling and peacefully completed his earthly assignment.
Ajayi served actively in ministry for 41 years, working under seven bishops across different dioceses. His journey took him through Lagos, Zambia, Kwara, Ondo and Kogi States, where he became widely known for his discipline, consistency and deep commitment to pastoral work.
Beyond preaching and leadership, he made notable contributions to church expansion through the establishment of new congregations in several locations. He also played leadership roles within the Christian Association of Nigeria in different regions, where he supported unity and cooperation among Christian groups.
A gifted musicologist and pianist, the late cleric also contributed to the development of church music. He served as Diocesan Chaplain for Choir Masters and Organists, where he helped train and guide church musicians. He was also closely involved with the Boys Brigade Nigeria, where he mentored young people in faith and personal development.
One of his most lasting achievements was his work in language and cultural inclusion within worship. He led efforts to translate the Yoruba hymn book and Anglican liturgy into the Ebira language, making church services more accessible to local worshippers. He also organized Ebira literacy programmes in Okene and Ihima between 1993 and 1996, combining education with evangelism.
He retired in 2010 after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 as an Archdeacon, but continued to remain active in ministry through teaching, counselling and spiritual guidance to individuals and church groups.
Funeral arrangements have been announced to begin on June 11, 2026 with an afternoon of tributes and a wake keep at Peace House, Irivogo, Oboroke, Ihima in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State. The funeral service will follow on June 12 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Oboroke, Ihima.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs E Z Ajayi, his children, grandchildren, a great grandchild and several relatives and associates who remember him for his service, faith and lasting influence.
