The Confederation of African Football has handed down disciplinary measures against Algeria following incidents that marred their quarter-final showdown with Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as reported by Zoyols Blog.
CAF’s disciplinary panel found Algeria guilty of misconduct involving players, team officials and supporters, both during and after the tense encounter with the Super Eagles. The ruling comes after a review of reports and footage linked to the post-match scenes.
As part of the sanctions, goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches. The ban will be served during Algeria’s AFCON 2027 qualification fixtures. Defender Rafik Belghali was also punished with a four-match suspension, although two of those games have been suspended, leaving him to miss the next two matches unless further violations occur.
Beyond player suspensions, CAF imposed a financial penalty on the Algerian Football Federation, slapping the body with a $100,000 fine for the improper conduct attributed to its players, officials and fans. The decision sends a clear message as CAF continues to tighten discipline around player and supporter behaviour at its tournaments.
