Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has sharply criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to recognize Palestine, describing the move as reckless and damaging.
Badenoch argued that the recognition effectively rewards terrorism without placing any conditions on Hamas, leaving hostages trapped in Gaza and failing to ease the suffering of civilians caught in the conflict. She accused Starmer of prioritizing political appeasement over sound judgment, claiming he was pandering to Labour’s left wing rather than presenting a clear foreign policy strategy.
“Rewarding terrorism with no conditions whatsoever leaves hostages languishing in Gaza and does nothing to stop the suffering of innocent people,” she said, stressing that the decision undermines the U.K.’s credibility.
The Conservative leader linked the recognition of Palestine to what she described as Labour’s misplaced priorities in other areas of governance. She argued that instead of tackling core issues like the NHS, job creation, and immigration, the government was pursuing divisive policies such as lowering the voting age and pushing assisted dying legislation.
Badenoch concluded that Starmer’s approach reflects a lack of vision and poor leadership. According to her, the Prime Minister is more focused on appeasing his party’s ideological base than addressing the country’s pressing challenges, a path she warned would leave behind what she called a “huge mess” for future governments to resolve.
