Boniface eyes full recovery after injury-hit season

Nigerian forward Victor Boniface has set his sights on regaining full fitness and consistency after an injury-plagued run that disrupted his momentum in Germany.

Now on loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, the 24-year-old admits his main focus this season is staying healthy and rebuilding confidence on the pitch. Boniface, who made the switch to Bremen on transfer deadline day, has struggled to find his rhythm after a promising start to life in the Bundesliga.

During the 2023/24 campaign, he was one of Leverkusen’s standout performers, scoring 14 goals and assisting eight in 24 appearances as the club claimed their first-ever Bundesliga title with an unbeaten record. But recurring injuries halted his progress and left him fighting to rediscover his sharpness.

“For me, the goal is simple—to go through this season without injuries,” Boniface said. “I want to contribute in every way I can, whether it’s scoring, assisting, or just giving my best for the team.”

Despite a slow start with two assists in eight appearances, the striker remains upbeat. “Football is like life,” he said. “You’ll have ups and downs, but what matters is staying focused and doing your part for the team.”

Boniface is also determined to earn his way back into the Super Eagles squad after falling out of favour in recent months. Werder Bremen currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga table with 15 points from 10 matches and are set to face RB Leipzig after the international break.

With his eyes fixed on full recovery and redemption, Boniface is ready to fight his way back to top form—one game at a time.
