From Politics to Palace Ladoja’s Journey to the Olubadan Throne

ZoyolsBlog

The journey of Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja to the revered throne of Ibadan is a story of resilience, politics and destiny fulfilled. The former governor of Oyo State, businessman and activist will on September 26, 2025, be crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, a position he began moving towards in 1991 when he became Mogaji of his family compound in Isale Osi.

Unlike other Yoruba kingdoms with limited royal lineages, the Olubadan system allows a gradual rise through clearly defined stages. Ladoja entered the Balogun line in 1993 as Jagun and, through patience and perseverance, climbed step by step despite political storms and personal trials.

His political career was as eventful as his traditional journey. He served as senator in the Third Republic and later became governor of Oyo State in 2003. Two years later he was impeached, but the Supreme Court reinstated him after 11 months in exile, cementing his reputation as a man not easily subdued. His defiance continued in 2018 when he rejected crowns offered to Ibadan High Chiefs, insisting only the Olubadan’s crown was legitimate. By 2024 he shifted stance, calling for unity above pride, a move that paved the way for his nomination.

Oba Ladoja’s coronation is attracting national attention, with political leaders, business moguls and traditional rulers expected to attend. To many, his life reflects sacrifice for democracy, loyalty to tradition and courage in politics. Governor Seyi Makinde has described him as a father figure whose wealth of experience will enrich the Olubadan stool, pledging to work closely with him for the peace and progress of Ibadan.

For the people, Ladoja’s ascension is more than a change of crown. It is the return of a leader whose journey through politics and tradition has shaped Ibadan for decades, and whose reign is expected to blend wisdom with service.
