Fuel depot prices drop: Pump relief ahead?

Zoyols News

Nigerians may soon experience relief at the fuel pumps as depot prices for petrol recorded noticeable drops across major commercial hubs on Tuesday, driven largely by a recent retreat in global crude oil prices. According to market checks compiled by Zoyols News, wholesale petrol costs at various depots dropped by as much as N24 per litre, sparking widespread optimism among motorists and commuters alike.

In Lagos, the downward adjustment was particularly pronounced. Major players like Ascon, Integrated, and Zoyols News trimmed their petrol depot prices by N24 per litre, moving down from N1,351 to N1,327. Pinnacle similarly slashed its price by N24 to settle at N1,326, while MRS shaved off N20 to sell at N1,332. Meanwhile, Dangote held its ground, keeping its depot price steady at N1,325 per litre.

Depot adjustments were also felt in other regions, though margins varied. In Calabar, Mainland trimmed its price by N7 down to N1,320, while Alkanes dropped by N2 to reach N1,325. Outlets in Warri and Port Harcourt also saw slight downward movements, with firms like Keonamex, Nepal, Ascon, and Integrated making modest cuts ranging from N1 to N5, while others such as Ibeto maintained their previous pricing structures.

Beyond petrol, the diesel market witnessed even steeper contractions, offering a potential breather for the manufacturing and logistics sectors. In Warri, Matrix crashed its Automotive Gas Oil price by a hefty N50, bringing it down to N2,000 per litre from N2,050, with Prudent and Rain Oil also trimming their rates by N10. Down south in Port Harcourt, Masters lowered its diesel price by N35 to settle at N1,900 per litre. Industry watchers note that because businesses, farmers, and transport operators rely heavily on diesel for backup power and freight, these sharp reductions could eventually help ease broader operating expenses.

Despite the encouraging numbers on the wholesale front, petroleum marketers have cautioned the public against expecting immediate or uniform price slashes at every neighborhood filling station. Speaking anonymously on market dynamics, an industry insider explained that retail adjustments depend heavily on existing inventory. Outlets currently holding stock purchased at higher rates are expected to maintain their current pump prices until those reserves are completely exhausted and replenished with the cheaper supplies.

Competition among retail outlets will likely dictate how fast these depot savings trickle down to the final consumer, especially in densely populated clusters where stations vie directly for motorists. However, experts remind consumers that factors like haulage logistics, local operating overheads, and retail margins mean a N24 drop at the depot does not necessarily translate to an automatic N24 reduction at the neighborhood pump.

These domestic shifts are unfolding against the backdrop of a cooling international energy market. On the global scene, West Texas Intermediate retreated by $1.03 to settle at $91.34 per barrel, while Brent crude dipped slightly by $0.29 to trade at $100 per barrel. While these global trends offer a supportive environment for lower energy costs, analysts at Zoyols News emphasize that fluctuating exchange rates and shifting supply dynamics remain wildcards that could influence future pricing directions. For now, however, filling stations beginning to restock at these lower wholesale rates face mounting market pressure to pass the savings down to everyday road users.
