Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has hinted at what could be the next chapter of his political career, admitting that he may one day pursue the governorship of Lagos State.
Obasa, who only recently weathered a political storm that briefly unseated him as Speaker, made the remarks during an interview with Television Continental.
Reflecting on a statement he made seven years ago in which he mentioned the Senate or the governorship as possible aspirations after serving as councillor and later as Speaker, Obasa clarified that the remark was never a firm declaration of intent.
He stressed that while personal ambition is natural in politics, ultimate decisions are shaped by the structures and leadership of one’s political party.
“Every politician has ambitions, but you can’t decide your future alone,” he explained. “You may wish to be something, but in reality, the leadership of the party sits together, consults, and decides who takes up what role. It’s about respect for the party and its processes.”
Pressed further, Obasa did not rule out the possibility of contesting for governor. Asked if he would prefer to remain in the Assembly for another four years, he replied candidly, “not really,” leaving many to believe that his sights are set on higher office.
