In a major boost for students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Opay Digital Services has extended its ₦1.2 billion nationwide scholarship fund to the institution, sealing the move with a Memorandum of Understanding at the university’s Council Chamber.
The initiative is part of Opay’s wider corporate social responsibility drive, which focuses on empowering young Nigerians through education and knowledge exchange.
Representing Opay at the event, the Chief Security Officer, Dr James Vandefan, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to education and community growth. He explained that the scholarship scheme is already benefiting students across other higher institutions in the country and that NSUK’s inclusion marks a significant milestone.
“Opay is committed to empowering young Nigerians through education. This partnership with NSUK is part of our ₦1.2 billion scholarship initiative aimed at supporting academically outstanding students who face financial difficulties,” he said.
Dr Vandefan, himself an alumnus of the university, described the partnership as personal. “As a graduate of this great institution, I can attest to its resilience and impact. By making NSUK the 15th beneficiary of our scholarship program, we hope to build a lasting partnership that will continue to drive knowledge, growth, and opportunity for years to come,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Maikano Muhammad Ari, applauded Opay for extending the scheme to NSUK. He assured that the scholarships would reach indigent students who need them most and noted that the collaboration opens doors for wider partnerships beyond scholarships.
The Head of CSR at Opay, Itoro Udo, also highlighted the long-term vision behind the initiative. “This is more than financial aid. We are working towards a broader relationship that will cover knowledge sharing, cybersecurity awareness, facility improvements, mentorship, and other forms of support. These will unfold in phases, but we believe their impact will be strongly felt in the university and beyond,” he said.
To mark the beginning of the partnership, Opay presented a ₦60 million cheque to the university management, representing the first tranche of scholarship support. The funds will provide direct financial relief to deserving students, while future programs under the MoU will focus on joint research, student training, recruitment opportunities, and academic collaborations.
With its ₦1.2 billion scholarship fund spread across higher institutions nationwide, Opay has reaffirmed its 10 year commitment to giving bright but financially challenged students the chance to complete their education, contribute to their communities, and play an active role in building the nation.
