Tragedy struck Bargaja village in the Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State early Monday morning, as bandits launched a midnight raid that left three residents dead and one woman in captivity. The attack, which caught the community off guard, has once again raised serious questions about the safety of rural settlements in the region.
According to witnesses who shared the harrowing details with Reports, the gunmen moved into the village around 1:20 am. Residents explained that the attackers managed to slip into the community undetected, outmaneuvering the locals and eventually overpowering the village vigilantes who tried to mount a defense.
One villager pointed out a lapse in their usual early-warning system, noting that they typically receive alerts from nearby towns when trouble is brewing. This time, however, there was no warning. By the time the dust settled, three men had lost their lives, and the bandits had disappeared into the night with a female captive.
There is a growing sense of frustration among the people of Bargaja regarding the lack of a quick security response. Many who spoke to Reports lamented that their calls for help during the ordeal seemed to go unheard. They claimed that the nearest security outposts are stationed too far away to provide any meaningful protection when every second counts.
As of the time of this report, official comments from the authorities remain unavailable. Efforts to get a statement from the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, as well as the Chairman of Isa Local Government, Sharehu Abubakar Kamarawa, were not successful as calls to their lines went unanswered. For now, the community is left to mourn their dead while pleading with the government to establish a more permanent and accessible security presence in the area.
