The United States Mission in Nigeria has reassured Nigerian students and exchange participants that they can continue their academic journeys in the United States without disruption, provided their F1 or J1 visas remain valid. The clarification was shared through an official message on social media, aimed at easing growing concerns following recent immigration policy adjustments. Authorities stressed that students currently holding valid study or exchange visas remain free to pursue education, research, and innovation opportunities at American institutions.
The statement comes after the implementation of Presidential Proclamation 10998, a security-focused immigration policy affecting entry procedures for certain foreign nationals. Under the policy, visa processing for some categories was partially suspended, including visitor, student, and immigrant visa applications. However, officials made it clear that the restriction only affects individuals who were outside the United States when the policy took effect and did not already possess valid visas. Those who secured their visas before the new rules were introduced will not have their documents cancelled.
Nigeria is among several countries affected by the partial suspension, which is part of broader adjustments to immigration controls in recent months. Earlier measures had already reduced the validity period of most non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian applicants, limiting them to short-term, single-entry travel permits in some cases. With the latest clarification, Nigerian students and exchange programme participants are expected to feel more secure about continuing their studies, as valid F1 and J1 visa holders can travel and study without facing new entry restrictions.
