Abuja Gas Boost: NNPCL Teams Up With Portland Gas for New LNG Plant

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has thrown its weight behind a new Mini-LNG and LCNG facility currently being developed by Portland Gas Limited in Gwagwalada, Abuja. This partnership is set to tap into the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline, with NNPCL committing to supply gas to the plant once the pipeline is officially commissioned this July.

The move marks a significant step in the federal government’s drive to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix. Speaking at an investment workshop in Abuja, Olalekan Ogunleye, NNPCL’s Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energy, highlighted the impressive momentum in the gas sector. The compressed natural gas (CNG) industry alone has already drawn in over $200 million in private sector investment commitments.

Ogunleye, who was represented at the event by Business Development Manager Suleiman Kachalla, explained that the facility is strategically located at the AKK Abuja take-off node. This positioning is intentional, as it aims to meet high market demand by providing fuel for vehicles and power for local industries. The goal is to significantly reduce the country’s heavy reliance on diesel while building a more resilient energy framework.

The leadership at Portland Gas Limited is equally optimistic about the impact of this project. Managing Director Folajimi Mohammed emphasized that gas is the undisputed fuel of Nigeria’s future. He noted that the company is fully aligned with the government’s mandate to expand gas access across the federation.

Mohammed told Reports that Portland Gas is leveraging years of experience in infrastructure development to ensure the project meets the highest standards of safety and innovation. He expressed confidence that the Nigerian gas sector is currently one of the most attractive areas for investment, and he reiterated that Portland Gas is prepared to take a front-seat role in this transformation.

By the time the AKK pipeline goes live in mid-2026, the Gwagwalada facility is expected to be a major player in making clean and sustainable energy a reality for both residents and businesses in the Federal Capital Territory.
