At the Nigerian Legal Awards held in Lagos, the Lead Pastor of The Elevation Church, Godman Akinlabi, called on lawyers to hold firmly to purpose and professionalism as they shape the nation’s justice system. His message centred on the need for legal practitioners to go beyond routine practice and embrace a deeper sense of responsibility that protects fairness and strengthens society.
Akinlabi urged them to keep equity at the heart of their work, reminding them that the law only fulfils its true value when it serves the people. He encouraged lawyers to anchor their decisions on what is right, noting that genuine progress can only be built on that foundation.
The convener of the awards, Lere Fashola, explained that the event was designed to recognise lawyers who play key roles across critical sectors of the economy. He described them as a driving force behind major transactions in finance, real estate, oil and gas and electricity. According to him, many of the nation’s biggest deals remain unseen by the public, but lawyers are the quiet hands that make them possible.
Fashola added that the awards also serve as a reminder of the need for integrity, professionalism and an understanding of the power carried by those who interpret and apply the law. He said this year’s edition looked closely at major deals completed within the last year, highlighting the legal minds that guided those agreements from the drafting table to execution. A special focus was also placed on the forty under forty category, which celebrates rising talents who are shaping the future of the profession.
Chair of the panel of judges, Kamal Shah of Stephenson Harwood, noted an impressive rise in innovation and service delivery among Nigerian legal practitioners. He encouraged them to take moments like this to pause and acknowledge their achievements.
Among the honorees was Khadija Belgore Yusuf, Executive Director and Head of Legal and Compliance at Alaro City Development. She described her recognition as proof that excellence always finds its way to the spotlight and stressed the importance of celebrating individuals who consistently give their best.
General Counsel at Zenith Bank, Michael Osilama Out, shared similar sentiments, describing Nigerian lawyers as highly capable both in the corporate world and in active practice. Honouring their work, he said, helps them stay motivated and continue raising standards.
Zoyols Blog reports that this year’s awardees included respected firms such as Aluko and Oyebode, G Elias, and Odujinrin and Adefulu, among others, all recognised for their influence and commitment within the legal space.
