The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its planned two-week warning strike, the union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. The decision follows an all-night National Executive Council meeting.
Prof. Piwuna explained that the suspension is intended to allow continued dialogue with government representatives after reviewing progress in ongoing negotiations. The union praised the federal government for re-engaging in talks and expressed gratitude to students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their support during the dispute.
Despite the temporary halt, ASUU stressed that several critical demands remain unresolved. Key issues include the full implementation of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, payment of withheld salaries and outstanding allowances, increased funding for public universities, and protection for lecturers facing victimization.
Prof. Piwuna added that the union will continue to closely monitor government commitments and is prepared to resume industrial action if necessary to safeguard the interests of Nigerian universities.
