Super Eagles defender Calvin Chinedu Bassey has continued to draw praise for his impressive displays, with former Nigeria international Sylvanus Okpala describing him as a player in a league of his own.
Born in Italy, Bassey features for Premier League side Fulham, where he operates comfortably as a left back or central defender. His football journey began in the youth ranks of Leicester City, though he never made a senior appearance for the club. In 2020, he moved to Rangers in Scotland on a free transfer, a decision that quickly paid off. Over two seasons, he made sixty five appearances, playing a key role as the club secured both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup.
His performances in Scotland earned him a big move in July 2022 to Dutch giants Ajax, a transfer that brought Rangers the highest fee in their history. A year later, Bassey returned to England, joining Fulham, where he has continued to grow in confidence and consistency at the highest level.
Eligible to represent Italy, England or Nigeria, Bassey chose to commit his international future to Nigeria in 2021. He made his debut during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in a goalless draw against Ghana in March 2022. His first international goal arrived in September 2025, when he found the net in a one all draw away to South Africa during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Since pulling on the green and white jersey, Bassey has earned forty three caps for Nigeria. His impact at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has been especially significant, with his strength, discipline and work rate standing out throughout the competition.
Reviewing his performances, Okpala hailed the Fulham defender as one of the standout players of the tournament. He praised Bassey’s marking ability and his knack for shutting down attacking threats, noting that these qualities place him among the very best in the Super Eagles squad.
Okpala also highlighted the defender’s composure and intelligence on the pitch, adding that Bassey shows great awareness under pressure. According to him, the defender understands when to push forward and when to hold his position, a balance that reflects his maturity and growing influence in the team.
