Defence Minister orders probe into Wike’s clash with naval officer

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has directed an immediate investigation into the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer in Abuja.

The incident, which took place earlier in the week, stirred widespread reactions after a video surfaced online showing Wike in a heated exchange with the officer at a checkpoint. The footage quickly went viral, prompting public debate over the conduct of both parties involved.

Matawalle, in a statement , said the Defence Headquarters has been instructed to look into the matter thoroughly and ensure that justice is served. He emphasized that while the Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to maintaining discipline and professionalism, they also expect mutual respect and cooperation from all citizens, regardless of status.

He assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made known as soon as possible, stressing that the Ministry of Defence will not condone any act that undermines civil-military relations.

The Defence Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding order and ensuring that interactions between security personnel and civilians are guided by respect, restraint, and lawful conduct.
